how long do your holidays last? do you get days of feasting and festivaling, like in asia and latin america? or are you boring, like we are here in the usa, where we get one day off for a holiday and get right back to work the next morning like nothing good ever happened.......hell, sometimes they even move it to the weekend so we won't have to take any days off......

sweety...here in Greece...we all live in Athens...around Good Thursday or Friday we decide to fuck off to our family houses that we have renovated φορ 100.000 euros and we only use for 2 weeks every year...we spend hours on huge traffic jams in the never-completed-motorways...we also spend every possible euro on tolls and Goody’s (the Greek equivalent to mc-fuckin-donalds)...
then we all decide to go to church for only the first and second time for the whole year...on Good Friday we go to watch the epitaph and try to burn each others hair with the candles that we are holding...on Good Saturday we try to do the same, but this time we have a purpore...we get dressed high, not because we expect the Albanian construction workers from the village to hit on us, but because the whole village is packed with Athenians...and a nice husband with a house in the countryside is not a bad idea after all...after we say the “christos anesti” (happy easter), we rush home, because we are very afraid of the thousand of fireworks and from midnight on we binge on meat and eggs and thousand other things...not so much because we have fasted for 40 days (as we should have done out of respect to our religion and body), but because our tradition obliges us...tradition is a female word in Greek language...so a bloody whore more or less...
on Sunday we BBQ a whole lamp or a goat and next to it we also BBQ all the internal organs of it wrapped with the intestines...we have to get completely hammered from all sorts of drinks and we have to try and rest after a 5 hour massive binge...the music is Greek folk, that only the old people dance and all the young people dislike...the lamp will never be eaten completely...and on our way back to Athens we will calculate over and over again how it is possible to spend 500 euros within 4 days for a family of 4, when all the food and accommodation was paid for…and every year we will say: next year I will not eat so much, I will not drink so much, I will avoid the traffic, I will not spend so much money...I will…I will…but next year comes...we have forgotten everything...and we find ourselves once again on the still-not-completed-motorway wondering how far is has progressed...and thinking of that years lamp...those years expenses…those years fireworks…

ahhhhhh, dearest, but you must understand it sounds so alive!! so alive!! to a starved and bored american girl. not romantic, mind you, but confused and mixed and beautiful and ugly -- which equates with refreshing to a girl who is sick of the order of our holidays, of the complete roteness with which we americans treat our days off, as if it were timed, each moment not quite felt because we're not quite sure if it is tradition or something we made up because we forgot tradition then realized that we had nothing to replace it with.....in any case, our holidays are dead, even as our happiness is calculated, so we cook with family because we remember that family is supposed to be important and cooking is supposed to be meaningful, but we have no relations with our family, so it seems very strange, and no one knows how to cook anymore, so it never tastes as good as it should....
